THE BICI GUIDE TO

THE TOUR DE FRANCE

Ladies and gentlemen, bike enthusiasts, and those who simply appreciate the finer things in life—welcome to the Tour de France! This isn’t just a race; it’s the greatest show on two wheels, a grand spectacle of endurance, strategy, and the unyielding human spirit. Whether you’re a seasoned fan or a curious newbie, we’ve got you covered with this guide. Prepare to immerse yourself in the peloton, dodge the occasional wandering cow, and cheer for your favorite lycra-clad gladiators!

OK, SO WHAT IS THE TOUR DE FRANCE?

Picture this: a throng of elite cyclists tearing through the picturesque French countryside, scaling mountains, sprinting across flatlands, and occasionally colliding in dramatic fashion.

That’s the Tour de France in a nutshell.

This three-week odyssey spans approximately 3,500 kilometers (or 2,175 miles for those still clinging to the imperial system). The race is segmented into stages, and the rider with the shortest overall time emerges victorious.

Simple, right?

Not quite.

AND WHAT IS WITH THE JERSEYS?

Yellow Jersey (Maillot Jaune)

The holy grail of cycling. Worn by the overall race leader. If you see someone in yellow, they’re kind of a big deal.

Green Jersey (Maillot Vert)

The sprinter’s prize. These speed demons can go from 0 to 60 faster than you can say "croissant."

Polka Dot Jersey (Maillot à Pois Rouges)

For the best climber. Think of a mountain goat on wheels.

White Jersey (Maillot Blanc)

Best young rider, for those 25 and under. Ah, youth—so full of potential and strong quads.

JASPER THE DISASTER, SPRINTER

HOW DO I TALK THE TALK?

Here are some key terms you are likely to hear while watching the coverage every morning for the next 21 days.

Peloton

The main group of riders. Think of it as a high-speed mobile village, with all the drama and camaraderie.

Breakaway

A group of riders who decide they need some alone time at the front.

Domestique

The unsung heroes. These riders support their team leader, fetching water, blocking wind, and sacrificing their own glory for the greater good.

Bonking

Not what you think! It means hitting the wall, running out of energy completely. Avoid at all costs.

I HEARD THERE IS A LOT OF CLIMBING

There is no denying there is a ton of climbing in the tour and that these climbs truly dictate the winner at the end of the 21 days. But, there are also some amazing other types of stages that bring life to this wild and crazy event.

Flat Stages

Ideal for sprinters, these stages are all about high speeds and photo finishes. Expect plenty of jostling for position and some jaw-dropping sprint finishes.

Mountain Stages

The ultimate test of endurance. Featuring grueling climbs and exhilarating descents, these stages separate the goats from the sheep.

Time Trials

A race against the clock. Riders go solo, aiming to set the fastest time over a set distance. It’s all about aerodynamics, power, and precision.

Hilly Stages

Not quite flat, not quite mountainous. These stages feature rolling terrain and are perfect for breakaways and puncheurs—riders who excel on short, steep climbs.

WHAT ABOUT THE EQUIPMENT?

BIKES

These aren't your average bikes. Tour de France bikes are lightweight, aerodynamic, and can cost more than your car. Crafted from carbon fiber, they’re designed for speed and efficiency.

CLOTHING

Lycra is the fabric of champions. The riders' kits are tight to reduce drag, and each team sports its unique colors and sponsors. Helmets are mandatory and as aerodynamic as possible.

SHOES AND PEDALS

Cyclists use clipless pedals that attach to special cycling shoes. This system allows for more efficient power transfer from rider to bike.
